Roll with it would be the catch phrase for last weekend.  After a long overdue visit to San Diego for to celebrate my mother’s 75th birthday, it was quite the welcome home present to feel an earthquake from the 15th floor of my brother’s condo in downtown!

The Rose Ensemble gave a concert at The Getty Center this past Saturday evening and most left on Sunday before they had a chance to share the experience.

What an impressive museum.  The grounds are magnificent – all done in travertine and terrazzo stone, fountains and rolling grassy hills and beautiful gardens.  I missed most of the sunshine – the fog started rolling in around 3:30 in the afternoon and by the time I was out of rehearsal it was pretty damp and cloudy.  Still really beautiful.

My family took a leisurely drive down the coast, while venturing through Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive and part of therodeo-drive Hollywood Hills – in my opinion this was a great way to avoid the massive traffic that was accumulating on the 405 freeway.

It was a stunning day.  Bright, sunny, 78 degrees and the Jacaranda trees were in full bloom laying a carpet of purple blossoms on the sidewalks and lawns.

My week in San Diego was lovely.  Each day started with the morning gloom, but by about 10am, everything had burned off and it was glorious – not too warm, about 72 every day.  Perfect for walking.

My mother’s birthday was last Tuesday and we spent the day by going to breakfast at a small cafe named Zanzibar near East Village in the Petco Ballpark area – great pancakes.  Yum.  After we walked through the Gaslamp district, looked in shops and casually made it back to her condo where we went through some old photographs of the family.

Later in the evening, my brother and I started Mom off with happy hour at a local bar on 5th Av for drinks called “Purple Haze” – a frozen mixture of Sangria and Margaritas with a nice plate of guacamole and chips for starters.  We then took her to dinner by the harbor at a restaurant called Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion.  Fresh fish, lobster potstickers are amazing, and a view of the boats and the bay – it was lovely.

I’m back home now in Minneapolis, on my deck on the wonderful Memorial Day Weekend, enjoying a fire as I type this blog post.  Hope everyone gets a chance to relax – it’s well worth it!
